Numerus
Train oral comprehension of numbers in foreign languages with real speech clips.
Oral comprehension of numbers in foreign languages can be challenging. Here’s why:
1. Frequency of numbers in ordinary discourse is usually low, so learners struggle to develop a habit of listening to numbers.
2. Most words are easy to recognize due to context, whereas numbers are isolated. For example:
With a population of 8 804 190, New York City is the most populated city in the US.
The context helps only a little: you can guess millions, but thousands are essentially random.
3. Some languages construct numerals differently. For example, how to say 95:
English: ninety five (90 5)
German: fünfundneunzig (5 and 90)
French: quatre-vingt-quinze (4-20-15)
The best way to train comprehension is frequent exposure to numbers in real speech. This app provides that:
1. A random 10-second clip from a video plays and repeats.
2. The user types the number they heard and taps “check”.
3. Subtitles appear and the app shows whether the answer is correct.
4. The user taps “next” to continue.
