It blocks unwanted calls, SMS messages, and app notifications without replacing your default call/SMS app.
Notification Screening applies your blocking rules to RCS, Signal, WhatsApp, email, and any other messaging app that posts a notification, not just your default SMS app, so spam gets filtered no matter which app it arrives through. Alerts give you a lightweight sound/vibration/flashlight/screen-wake chime for allowed screened notifications, instead of a duplicate full notification.

Optionally also check it against your Number/Text Rules, and optionally allow it if the number had a recent, non-blocked call in your own Calls log.
